On Thursday, June 8, 1933, Patrolman Mathew M. Weiss1, Badge No. 209, was involved an automobile accident at University and Hampden Avenues in the City of Saint Paul wherein he was ejected from his automobile and critically injured after a collision with a vehicle driven by J. E. Manning. Weiss died nine days later at 0205 hours (2:05 a.m.) Monday, June 17, 1933, in Saint Joseph’s Hospital of a cerebular laceration and skull fracture.
Although police personnel records state that Mathew M. Weiss was born on January 1, 1879, other records indicate that it was on October 27, 1876. Raised in Eden Lake Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, fifty-six year old Mathew M. Weiss had been with the Bureau of Police since May 1, 1911 (twenty-two years) and was survived by his wife, Agnes, and one son, Lee Allen. Patrolman Weiss’ funeral was held on Tuesday, June 20, 1933, at the Gross Funeral Parlor, and he is buried at Elmhurst Cemetery, Saint Paul, Minnesota.
