On Tuesday, March 13, 1928, Patrolman Axel Julius Söderberg1, Badge No. 211, working out of the Prior Avenue Substation, was assisting children cross the intersection of University and Cromwell Avenues in the City of Saint Paul when he slipped and fell on the icy pavement. He died in Ancker Hospital on Monday, March 19, 1928 (one week later) from an abdominal hemorrhage suffered in the fall.

Although police personnel records state that Axel Julius Söderberg was born on March 26, 1898, other records indicate that it was September 8, 1873. Raised in Lundby, Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden, fifty-four year old Söderberg had been with the Bureau of Police since January 20, 1912 (sixteen years), and was survived by his wife, Elfrida (Freda), and two grown children, son, Margon (Morgan), and daughter, Marion McNiff. Patrolman Söderberg’s funeral was held on Thursday, March 22, 1928, in his home at 897 Raymond Avenue, and he is buried at Union Cemetery, in what is now Maplewood, Minnesota.
